Caracas, Venezuela native Richard Dulcey has been working in the IT field for the past 20 years – exclusively in South America. A specialist in Linux engineering, Richard was working and living in Argentina in 2024 when a longtime colleague and friend named Reynaldo Martinez shared the positive experience he was having working remotely for UBX Cloud.
A fellow countryman, Reynaldo saw a great fit between Richard’s skills and the needs of UBX clients.
“We never stopped communicating with each other for 20 years,” Richard recalls. “And one day he asked me, ‘Do you want to work here?’”
UBX had big plans that would benefit from Richard’s expertise in deploying servers, especially as the company was moving toward installing OpenStack.
The opportunity meant he could return home to Caracas. It also presented a lot of unanswered questions, but one thing Richard knew was that Reynaldo would not steer him wrong.
“Reynaldo is a good person and every day you can learn something from him here,” Richard says. “I call him one of my dear friends. I call him my father in IT because most of what I know I learned from him.”
That’s why Reynaldo is known at UBX Cloud as Grandpa Internet, who introduced Richard to President Gringo – which of course is UBX Cloud President Steven Panovski.
It proved to be an ideal fit, not only because Richard loves and excels at the work, but also because – even remotely from Caracas – the work atmosphere at UBX Cloud is unlike anything he has known.
“This is amazing because I don’t know many company presidents like Steven,” Richard says. “As we say, we have a gringo. I don’t know many people from the United States but he has a great sense of humor. He will make you laugh every day.”
Richard’s background has been a combination of formal education and in-the-field work. He has studied IT at the Universidad Alejandro de Humboldt in Caracas for several years, and is one year’s work away from completing his degree.
While he is not currently taking classes toward that goal, Richard said a return to school in October might fit into his plans.
